UNISON calls for Robert Gordon University to remove Donald Trump's honorary degree

Date: Wednesday 9 December 2015
UNISON members working at Robert Gordon University have written to the Principal, Professor Prondzynski, calling on him to remove Donald Trump's honorary degree because he is reported to have called for "a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States"

UNISON believes this to be unacceptable.

Colin Jones, Robert Gordon UNISON steward said:

“Robert Gordon University has a strong international reputation and UNISON believes that our University's association with Donald Trump can only undermine all the hard work we have put into building this worldwide reputation.

"We believe that the University must distance itself from such views and make it as clear as possible that such statements are both unacceptable and irresponsible. They are divisive and put Muslim friends, family and colleagues in danger of discrimination and reprisals, and will make international relations worse not better.

END

Biggest Aberdeen May Day

For the first time for some years, the May Day march went the length of Union Street with UNISON members out in force. One of the biggest turnouts seen in Aberdeen heard speakers in the Castlegate before going on to a Family Fun Day in Union Terrace Gardens, organised by Aberdeen City UNISON and Aberdeenshire
UNISON in collaboration with EIS.

Aberdeen wins battle against privatisation

Aberdeen City UNISON branch is celebrating after its campaigning to stop the privitisation of of 'corporate governance' services proved sucessful.

The council had been looking at a so-call "alternative delivery method - ie slling off - for services such as finance, human resources, customer care, ICT, benefits and regulations. But last night it voted to keep the services in-house.

Branch secretary Karen Davidson said: "These services will now remain in house, where committed and dedicated council staff can provide the best service for the citizens of Aberdeen.

"The branch have campaigned hard for 18 months for this outcome," she added. "We are sure that the councilors who voted in favour of in-house staff recognise the excellent service our members provide."

Aberdeen is the second major Scottish council to reject privatisation plans for major services after a UNISON campaign, following an earlier decision by Edinburgh.
