STUC Lobby of Scottish Liberal Democrat Conference 16 March, Dundee

As part of the wider national campaign for fair welfare and an end to the attack on benefits, there is an STUC Lobby of the Scottish Liberal Democrat Conference in Dundee, 16 March at Westpark conference centre in Dundee. It is still not too late for the Government to change its position on welfare including reversing its decision on the horrific bedroom tax and abandoning its attempt to cap benefits for many of the poorest in society.

Full details and how you can support the lobby are on 'There is a Better Way' website

The first of two rallies on the 22nd of June, held at lunchtime in advance of the budget to maximise media coverage.

Unions, service users and allied campaigning groups will come together in Dundee's Albert Square to celebrate the Public Services we currently have and argue for alternatives to the vicious cuts that will be proposed in the budget that afternoon, and in the Comprehensive Spending Review to follow.
Supported by Dundee Trades Council, local Branches of Unison, Unite, the GMB, FBU, UCU and PCS, along with the Right to Work Campaign, Youth Fight for Jobs, Peoples' Charter Campaign, Dundee Pensioners' Forum and CPB.

Demonstrating strong opposition to these cuts now sends the right message at a crucial time - that the people of Dundee know we deserve the best, and will not accept job losses to pay for the greed of bankers and bosses who gambled away our future.

TV cameras will be there - it is important that you are there too!

Social work union welcomes Brandon Muir reports

Wednesday 19 August 2009

UNISON, the union representing Scotland’s social work staff, today welcomed the two reports into the Brandon Muir case in Dundee.

Rory Malone, Dundee UNISON Branch Secretary said;

"At a time when some press and politicians appear to queue up to blame social work staff each time a family tragedy like this occurs, we welcome the findings of these independent and authoritative reports that no blame falls on members in Social Work.

"Dundee’s social care staff work very hard, often in difficult circumstances, to try and protect our children and all feel tragedies like this deeply. It is simply not possible to eradicate all risks, but UNISON has gone on record to identify a range of steps that can be taken to improve the position of social work staff and reduce that risk."*

UNISON has already started work with Dundee City Council to address some of the issues in the social work and will continue to discuss ways to implement recommendations in the report.
