Courses coming up

Please find below a list of upcoming training courses where we still have availability. If you have any activists who are interested in attending any of these courses please arrange for the booking form to be completed and then forward to activisteducationscotland@unison.co.uk or post to Activist Education (Scotland), UNISON, 53 Shore Street, Inverness, IV1 1NF as soon as possible:-


• Employment Law Discrimination – 24 August – Glasgow
This course is open to experienced stewards and Branch Officers. Covers all aspects of potential discrimination as defined by Equality legislation.


• Further Representation Skills – 5-7 September – Inverness (course starts at 12.30 pm on the first day)
As the second course in the new stewards training path this course concentrates on building the skills, techniques and confidence needed to represent members for grievances and disciplinaries. It examines the contents of grievance and disciplinary procedures, and the influence of the ACAS Code of Practice, and then moves on to develop the skills needed for preparing a case, interviewing and representing a member. Completion of the Organising Stewards course is required before attending this one. This course can also be used to renew stewards ERA accreditation if no training has been undertaken in the last 5 years.


• Equality Reps – 6-8 September – Glasgow
The course is aimed at new stewards or those who may be interested in becoming equality representatives. It is also suitable for more experienced stewards with an interest in more detailed work on equalities. The course covers a general introduction to the various strands of equality, introduces the legal framework and concentrates on how branches can deal with equality issues in the workplace including the use of Equality Impact Assessments.


• Absence Management & Capability – 7 & 8 September – Edinburgh
This course covers both good practice around Sickness Absence Policies (day 1) and the law on Capability Dismissals (day 2). The course is open to experienced stewards, branch officers and health & safety reps.


• Organising Stewards (part 1) – 16-18 September – Glasgow (residential) (only 5 spaces left)
This is an essential course for newly elected stewards and compulsory for accreditation. Although this is a weekend residential course, applicants can attend as day delegates. Part 2 of this course is being held on 21-23 October.


• Negotiating Skills – 20 & 21 September – Edinburgh
This course will enable you to effectively negotiate with your line manager or senior management on behalf of your members and will cover understanding the process of negotiating; becoming familiar with different styles of negotiating; working effectively as part of a negotiating team; understanding how to prepare, present and negotiate on an issue; developing and practising negotiating skills. To be eligible to attend applicants must be ERA accredited. This course can also be used to renew stewards ERA accreditation if no training has been undertaken in the last 5 years.


• Union Learning Reps (ULR) – 27 & 28 September – Glasgow
This course will give participants an overview of the role of a Union Learning Rep.


• Organising Stewards (part 1) – 28 & 29 September – Edinburgh (only 5 spaces left)
This is an essential course for newly elected stewards and compulsory for accreditation. Part 2 of this course is being held on 25-27 October.
